Stimulate Those Walking Muscles

As a physical therapist/patient or parent aiming to place e-stim pads on the glutes and other "walking" muscles, here are the muscles you can target and how to locate them:

1. Gluteus Maximus: This is the largest muscle in the glutes and is responsible for hip extension and external rotation. To locate it, have the patient lie on their stomach or stand up straight. The gluteus maximus is the prominent muscle in the buttocks area that forms the rounded shape.

2. Gluteus Medius: This muscle is located on the outer surface of the pelvis and is responsible for hip abduction and stabilization. To locate it, have the patient stand on one leg. The gluteus medius can be felt as a muscle on the side of the hip that helps stabilize the pelvis during walking.

3. Quadriceps: These are the muscles located on the front of the thigh and are responsible for knee extension. To locate them, have the patient sit or lie down with the knee slightly bent. The quadriceps can be felt as a group of muscles on the front of the thigh.

4. Hamstrings: These are the muscles located on the back of the thigh and are responsible for knee flexion and hip extension. To locate them, have the patient lie on their back or stomach with the knee slightly bent. The hamstrings can be felt as muscles on the back of the thigh.

5. Calves (Gastrocnemius and Soleus): These muscles are located in the lower leg and are responsible for ankle plantar flexion. To locate them, have the patient sit or stand with their feet flat on the ground. The calves can be felt as muscles in the back of the lower leg.

When placing e-stim pads on these muscles, ensure that the pads are placed over the belly of the muscle for optimal stimulation. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for electrode pad placement and ensure that the patient is comfortable throughout the process.
